Rite of Acceptance, 31st May 2009

We gather today to witness our inquirers to be called into the catechumenate! We are very proud of them, having responded to God’s calling and have decided to carry on.

The sponsors told the inquirers what was expected of them, and the inquirers answered 2 questions with “Faith” and “Eternal Life”.  They were signed by their sponsors on their forehead, eyes, ears, lips, heart, shoulders and feet. The priest then called on the 2 candidates in this journey, Michael and Wei Lin, who wish to be received into the full communion of the Catholic church. Once the rites were done, the catechumens and candidates took their seats in church.

We were dismissed after the Prayers of the Faithful(but for the following weeks they will be dismissed after the homily) and we proceeded to the RCIA room for the next part of the session. Ursula spoke about the part of the mass we will be attending every sunday, and explained a bit on the Gospel, John 20: 19-23, first reading, Acts 2: 1-11, second reading, 1 Cor 12: 3-7, 12-13 and the Psalm, Psalm 103.  We were also explained why we had to wear red or orange – today is Pentecost, which marks the birth of the church. In a way, we are celebrating the birth of the church, and it calls for dressing up!

We will see all on wednesday for the next session.

Day of Recollection, 24th May 2009

Today, the inquirers spent a day at St Patrick’s School reflecting on the first stage of their RCIA journey. We spent an eventful day with them, hoping to prepare them for the upcoming Rite of Acceptance.

We assembled at the canteen around 8am and we were treated to a yummy breakfast. We went upstairs to the retreat centre, where we were told of the process of the RCIA journey. We listened to 2 neophytes, Adeline, who got baptised in 2009 and Benjamin, who was baptised in 2006. We were told to record in our journals on our reflection and thoughts.

There was a quick tea break before we went back to the retreat centre to hear another conference. The inquirers were given a sheet of paper to relate their experience with the home sessions and we broke into pretty small groups for sharing before lunch. At lunch, we were joined by the companions and SCC members before the inquirers and sponsors headed up to the retreat centre again as the companions and SCC members proceeded to the chapel for prayers.

The inquirers were told to put up a skit of the advantages and disadvantages of being a Catholic after the third conference. After a short tea break, the inquirers put up their skits to the sponsors, companions and SCC members.

We hope that all the inquirers are fully prepared for the next stage of their journey as it is exciting. However, there is a possibly that few might drop out, so let’s pray for these people.

Sharing Faith & Friendship 8

Today marks our last home session. How you been enjoying it so far? We asked you to identify the people, places and public occasions in Singapore where there is a clear Catholic or Christian presence. Can you name any?

We talked about death and you were asked to relate stories on funerals you have attended that are non Christian like. What are they like?

We read from the bible John 20: 1-10, 19-21, 24-29 and then 3 Catholics gave sharings on first experience of Christian funeral, losing someone whom we loved dearly and witnessing a Christian death. We sang “We walk by Faith” and you heard stories about the raising of Lazarus, Jesus bringing a widow’s son back to life and resurrection. After hearing so much, and coming here for the past 8 weeks, what are your thoughts and feelings now? Who do you say Jesus is?

We hope you have enjoyed the past 8 weeks as much as us. See you this sunday for the Day of Recollection.

Sharing Faith & Friendship 7

Let’s praise and thank God for something. And we did. We also remembered our disappointments, distress, saddness. We offered everything up today.

Then we made things light hearted. We moved on to an activity where you needed to get up together with your partner, arms locked together but you are not supposed to use your hands or unlock your arms to get up. Did you manage to do it?

We turned to Luke 22: 39-46. Then the Catholics went to share on 3 stories relating to the Passion: Betrayal of Judas, Triumphant reception into Jerusalem and the three times he fell in the Way of the Cross.

We went on to read another passage, this time from Isaiah 53: 1-12. We sang a hymn before asking for your thoughts. Who do you think Jesus is, after hearing everything that was related?

You were also told to write down in your journals about what you want to tell Jesus if you ever had a conversation with him. Hope you did so.
